A Poodoku puzzle in play: a 7×7 board of pastel coloured regions with four crowned poos placed and ✕ marks on the tiles that are ruled out

Try a Poodoku puzzle right here

This is stall 14 from the game, a gentle 5×5. Five colours, five poos, one solution.

How this board works

  1. Tap a tile once to mark it ✕: no poo can go there.
  2. Tap it again to drop a poo. A third tap clears it.
  3. Place one poo in every row, every column and every colour, with no two touching, even at the corners.

Start anywhere. A good first question: which colour has the fewest places to go?

How to play Poodoku

The board is a restroom of coloured tile regions. Three rules decide where the poos go, and together they leave exactly one answer.

  1. One poo per colour

Each coloured region holds exactly one poo. No empty regions, no double-dipping.

  2. One poo per row and column

Every row and every column of the board needs exactly one poo.

  3. No touching

Two poos can never sit next to each other: not side by side, not above and below, not even corner to corner.

Hearts. You start each stall with three hearts. A poo on a wrong tile costs one. Marking ✕ is always free, so the safe way to play is to rule tiles out first and drop a poo only when you are sure. Controls in the game: tap to mark ✕, double-tap to drop a poo, drag to mark a whole line of tiles.

Five tricks that solve every Star Battle and Queens puzzle

Every Poodoku stall can be solved with these five ideas. The game introduces them one at a time, and its hints name the trick they use, so you learn the reasoning and not only the answer.

  1. Trick 1

    Last spot

Every row, column and colour needs exactly one poo. When all but one of its tiles are ruled out, the poo goes on the last one.

  2. Trick 2

    Boxed in

A colour that fits inside a single row owns that row: the row's poo must be that colour's, so every other tile in the row can be ruled out. The same goes for columns.

  3. Trick 3

    Would block

A tile is ruled out if a poo there would leave another colour with nowhere to go. Because poos can't touch, one poo can knock out every tile of a small neighbouring colour.

  4. Trick 4

    Pairs

Two colours that both fit only in the same two rows own those rows. Two rows have room for just two poos, so nothing else in them can hold one.

  5. Trick 5

    Groups

The same idea with more colours: three colours that fit only in three rows own those three rows, and so on. This is the trick behind the hardest boards.

Questions people ask

What is Poodoku?

Poodoku is a free logic puzzle game for Android by Zerf Studios. You place one poo in every row, every column and every coloured region of the board so that no two poos touch, even diagonally. It is sometimes written Poo-doku.

Is Poodoku the same as Star Battle or Queens?

It belongs to the same family. Star Battle puzzles (also known as Two Not Touch) and Queens puzzles use the same three rules: one piece per row, per column and per region, with no two touching. Poodoku is the one-piece version, with boards from 4×4 to 10×10 and a crowned poo in place of the star or queen.

How is Poodoku different from Sudoku?

There are no numbers. Like Sudoku, every row and column follows a rule and every puzzle has one answer you reach by deduction. In Poodoku you reason about coloured regions and about which tiles a poo would block, so a board takes a few minutes and not half an hour.

Do I ever have to guess?

No. Every one of the 1,860 stalls and every Daily Drop was checked by a solver before it shipped and can be finished with the five tricks the game teaches. If you are stuck, a hint shows the next sure move and explains why it works.

Is Poodoku free?

Yes. Poodoku is free to download and play, and it is paid for by ads. Hints and revives are free by watching a short video. A one-time Standard No-Ads purchase removes the banners and the full-screen ads between stalls. The weekly Royal Club removes every ad and adds offline play, free hints and revives, and a golden look.

Can I play Poodoku offline?

The free game needs an internet connection. Offline play is part of the Royal Club membership.

Which languages does Poodoku support?

Thirteen: English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hungarian, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Arabic and Persian. Arabic and Persian are shown right to left.

What do I need to play?

An Android phone or tablet running Android 7.0 or newer. Poodoku is played in portrait. There is no account to create.
